Castle Mont Rouge was created by artist Robert Mihaly, known for sculpting the angel at the grave of Elizabeth Edwards and his Duke University gargoyles. The castle was built in 2005 and has been uninhabited since 2008.

In May of 2014, Mihaly launched an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign to fund restoration of the castle. When we visited in January of 2016, it looked like a fence was being installed around the property, so hopefully someone will be restoring the castle soon as it is beautiful and looks straight out of a fairy tale.

Please Note: Castle Mont Rouge is private property. It has been heavily vandalized in the past. If you visit, please be respectful of the castle, the forest, and the owner.

UPDATE 05.05.17
We spoke with Robert Mihaly today and while he is currently doing some work on Castle Mont Rouge, he plans on beginning serious restoration on the castle in March of 2018 which he estimates will take a year. He plans on turning it into an event venue and possibly a place where visitors can stay for a weekend. After that, Mihaly plans to create a 6,000+ square foot addition to the castle. After the addition is complete, a moat and drawbridge will be created.
