3 Doors Down, Collective Soul, and Soul Asylum barreled into Greensboro's White Oak Amphitheatre on Wednesday night like a runaway train with their Rock & Roll Express Tour.

Soul Asylum kicked off the night with a short, but still awesome, six-song set. They put on a great show, but as a huge fan of Soul Asylum's music, I would have loved to have heard a few more songs, especially since it seemed their set time was shorter than the time it took to tear down their gear and set up for Collective Soul. Dave Pirner, please come back to the area on a headline tour!

SOUL ASYLUM SET LIST

"Freaks"
"Misery"
"Somebody To Shove"
"Whatcha Need"
"String Of Pearls"
"Runaway Train"

I had never seen Collective Soul live, but figured Ed Roland put on a pretty good show when I interviewed him several years ago when he was part of Kings Of Chaos, an all-star touring band consisting of Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, and Duff McKagan; Def Leppard's Joe Elliot and Vivian Campbell; Skid Row's Sebastian Bach; and Deep Purple's Glenn Hughes. On Wednesday night, it didn't take long to figure out that not only does Collective Soul put on one hell of a show, but Roland is one of the most energetic frontmen in rock 'n' roll.

Collective Soul unloaded their trainload of hits on the stage of White Oak and the fans went crazy. They played hit after hit after hit as Roland jumped, shimmied, and danced across the stage, sending bolts of energy through the crowd. The highlight of the show was the piano-driven "Shine," a fresh take on their classic tune.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't know if the crowd would have anything left to give after Collective Soul's set. It felt like we had just seen the headliner. But singer Brad Arnold, guitarists Chet Roberts and Chris Henderson, and the rest of the band hit the stage in between American flags and brought the crowd to their feet and back to life. The band rocked fan favorites like "Kryptonite," "It's Not My Time," and "Here Without You," and even threw in a Charlie Daniels cover, "In America," for good measure.
