Friday night, lightning struck more than once around Red Hat Amphitheater. Penelope Road opened the night for Marcus King on part 2 of his Darling Blue Tour. Penelope Road’s set was cut a bit short as lighting was spotted in the area and the amphitheater was evacuated.

An hour later the party started back up with King taking the stage. The seats were wet, but that didn’t really matter as the crowd stayed on their feet the whole night.

The music was amazing, early on the band played “Lilac Wine,” “Delilah,” “Levi’s & Goodbyes,” and “This Ol’ Cowboy.” The crowd always sang along enthusiastically to each and every song as if they have a personal connection to all of the words.

King mentioned he is mighty fond of Rad Hat. He met his wife Briley there and he also proposed to her at Red Hat. He said when he told his people he wanted to come to Red Hat, “I’m gonna blow that mother fucker up!” He said, “we’re gonna see how far we can push the rules - they’ve been mighty nice to us here.” Since his set started late due to the lightning delay, he was able to play until about 11:15pm.

Paul proposes to Becky before the show

You might say lightning has stuck twice in the same spot. On this night during the meet and greet before the show, Paul dropped down to one knee and proposed to Becky. I figure this probably happens at shows somewhat frequently. But, in this case it was done right in front of King. Wow, what a special night!

At one point, King said, “Put up a light for this next song. It’s the remembrance part of the show to remember all the things we’ve lost.” He then played “Carolina Honey,” which he said he wrote when he was here last year.

Towards the end of the show, King invited his wife, Briley, to the stage to sing “Goodbye Carolina” with him. Their harmonizing was great and she looked like she was having a blast on stage with him. She stayed for a second song and sang Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”

The night would not be complete without “Heartlands” and “Honky Tonk Hell,” which is how the set ended. Even with the lightning delay and evacuation, it was a great night with one big happy family rocking’ out to the tunes of Marcus King.
