In Lenoir, they don't rid their town of witches by burning them at the stake. They just let them show themselves out.

Through a keyhole.

In the 1800s, George Powell's home burned to the ground. According to WRAL, a witch was responsible for the log cabin's destruction.

According to the book Lowcountry Voodoo: Beginner's Guide To Tales, Spells, And Boo Hags, a haint torched the home.

Both sources agree that when it came time to rebuild his home, Powell outfitted it with a large keyhole, which allowed witches, ghosts, chupacabras, and other nasties to escape at will. It must have worked because Powell's house stood until the 1970s when it was razed to make way for the Trinity United Methodist Church.

And here's the most unbelievable part of the story: the church kept the keyhole and it can still be seen in the sign/planter in front of the church.

Guess having that keyhole ready to go is cheaper than hiring an exorcist.

  1. I take offence to the idea that witches are "nasties."
Witches are simply women who say "no" and go their own way. Do better.
