The "Old Man Traffic" statue of Hugh McManaway was erected in 2000 near the intersection of Providence and Queens in Charlotte. The memorial was created to honor McManaway, who stood near that spot every day, directing traffic for over twenty-five years, despite the fact that no one asked or paid him to do so.

Today, his memory is used to announce birthdays, weddings, and marriage proposals.

  1. I've lived in Charlotte since 1957, I remember Huge standing out by Providence Rd.in the Meyers Park neighborhood back in the '70's & '80'. He would direct traffic and folks would blow their car horns and wave back to him. Sometimes he would be holding a violin case. Always friendly!
