Charlotte's Wilkinson Boulevard is like the Land That Time Forgot. It's home to the iconic 1947 Dairy Queen Eskimo sign, the iconic 1959 Bar-B-Q King sign, and our good friend Tim the car parts man.

Next door to Tim is the Oakden Motel. We can't really find anything online about the motel. Basically, all we know is it has eighteen rooms and offers such luxuries as telephones and HBO.

  1. The 1947 Eskimo Dairy Queen sign on Wilkinson Blvd., leans slightly to the west. That happened back in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo "blew' thru Charlotte. Just a block or so to the west and you will see the 1959 Bar-B-Q King sign. The drive-in restaurant is worth stopping for. You pull into a spot and the menu and speaker to place your order are there. Your order is delivered to your car by a carhop. My favorite treat is The Bar-B-Q Plate with Onion Rings. They cut and make the onion rings by hand every day. I wash it down with a Cherry Lemon 7-Up. They have free refills so be sure and tip your carhop. The sign and the restaurant look just as they did in 1959. I am 61yo and been eating here since I was 5yo. Now I get to bring the grandkids! They think it's cool to dine in the car like the "old days"!
