Fresh off last month's release of Mean Dog, Trampoline, The Suitcase Junket will be heading to the Cat's Cradle on May 15th. We caught up with Matt Lorenz to talk about his dream music festival, what he looks for when he hits a new town, and raccoon penis bones.
Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
I call it swamp yankee music, but it's basically a mix of American styles: rock and roll, blues, folk and country all filtered through my mess of a pile of homemade foot-percussion with warm fuzzed-out guitars with some loud hollering singing
What's the first concert you attended?
My folks took us to a lot of shows when we were kids but the first one I really remember was Paul Simon with Warren Zevon.
What's the strangest gig you've played?
That's a long list. The weirdest ones are when you get hired for a private show of some kind and quickly realize the people who hired you don't know how to act around live music. That's always special.
What's the craziest thing a fan has done at one of your shows?
Well, that's another long list, but right up there is the guy who gifted me a raccoon baculum. (That's a penis bone)
What's the first thing you look for when you hit a new town?
A spot to walk in the woods, a good beer, a good coffee, and a greasy spoon diner.
How do you spend your days on the road?
It's mostly driving for me. When I've got free time I like to get out in nature, write, or do a van project of some kind.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Yeah, but they lose their power if I talk about them.
What's some advice you'd give to a band embarking on its first tour?
Buckle up.
Final question: You're the opening act of a music festival. You can get any five artists, living or dead, to perform on the bill with you. Which five acts do you choose and what song do you all perform together for the final jam?
Tough one. This list would change each time I wrote it down, but here's today's: Bessie Smith, Joan Jett, Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix, and Otis Redding. And if I'm in charge here, I'd probably make them play one of my songs. Heh.
