The Dollyrots, the powerhouse pop punk husband and wife duo of Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas, kicked off their summer tour with The Pink Spiders on July 30th at Charlotte's legendary Milestone Club.

Opening acts Farewell Albatross, BitterHearts, and The Pink Spiders had the Milestone and its inhabitants good and sweaty and ready by the time the Dollyrots hit the stage shortly before midnight. The Dollyrots released their latest album, Daydream Explosion, on July 12th and were eager to show it off to the crowd by performing four songs from the disc: "Everything," "Animal," "In Your Face," and their homage to Andrew W.K., "I Know How To Party." But this wasn't a show just to feature the new album. The Dollyrots performed many classic tunes like "Twist Me To Left," "Jackie Chan," "Because I'm Awesome," and their infectious cover of Melanie's "Brand New Key."

Ogden's vocals and storytelling between songs were irresistible and she often gathered inspiration from the Milestone itself. Some Bad Brains graffiti on the wall led to a story about touring with H.R. She also talked about an old school desk that was near the stage when the band played the Milestone in the early 2000s, claiming that Kurt Cobain sat there before Nirvana's set, headbanging to his band's opening act. Cabezas's guitar playing was on fire as he constantly jumped across the stage, only coming back down to sing into the mic. Sixteen songs seemed to go by in sixteen minutes, leaving all of us wanting more.

It was an amazing show. If you love listening to their albums, the Dollyrots are even better live. Do yourself a favor and check out one of their upcoming shows this summer!
