Singer Savannah Conley is opening for Ben Folds and Violent Femmes on their fourteen-city tour this summer, which rolls into Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre on August 8th. We caught up with Savannah to talk about life on the road, monster trucks, and her dream music festival.

How would you describe your music for any readers who may not be as familiar with you yet?
That's a hard one! I'm the worst judge. I guess it's just music from the lens of a girl who listened to almost exclusively British indie rock, but grew up in the southern US.

What's the first concert you attended?
Technically Wynonna Judd, but my first concert of choice was Kelly Clarkson (American idol 4ever).

What's the strangest gig you've played?
Played one show during a monster truck rally. While the trucks were... trucking.

What's the craziest thing a fan has done at one of your shows?
We haven't pulled too many crazies yet, but I did sign a baby. In retrospect, not awesome.

What's the first thing you look for when you hit a new town?
Coffee. No question.

How do you spend your days on the road?
We drink an inordinate amount of coffee and love to try new spots, so that's a huge one. We also like to see whatever there is to see and go to movies. Sometimes I'll try to find another show happening around us.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Not really unless you count being late to go on stage. A bad ritual.

What's some advice you'd give to a band embarking on its first tour?
Learn how to not need to pee for as long as you possibly can. You never want to be the one who needs to stop.

Final question: You're the opening act of a music festival. You can get any five artists, living or dead, to perform on the bill with you. Which five acts do you choose and what song do you all perform together for the final jam?
Ohhhh my god. That is insane. I would want it to be a pretty wild mix. Like Neil Young, Kendrick Lamar, The Cure, Tom Petty, and I don't know...Coldplay? Throw Chet Atkins in there for good measure. We'd all jam to "All Star" by Smashmouth.
