If you're 100 years old like us, you probably remember Shirley Hemphill from the classic '70s sitcom What's Happening!! But did you know that prior to becoming a breakout sitcom star, Hemphill was an Asheville native and lived there until her 20s when she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a stand-up comic? Her comedic timing led to roles on the aforementioned What's Happening!! as well as its sequel What's Happening Now!, The Love Boat, CB4, One In A Million, Martin, and more.

Shirley Hemphill died in 1999 at the age of 52. Gus Cutty painted this awesome memorial to her on the side of The Mothlight in Asheville.
