Greensboro is quickly becoming a mecca for murals, due not only to the immensely talented and prolific local artists but also to the efforts of Kotis Street Art and Rockers Print Shop in bringing internationally-renowned artists to town. However, the most well-known mural in Greensboro may be one that preceded this recent mural boon by over thirty years: the Greensboro Mermaid.

Painted by Wayne Fulcher in 1983, the mermaid mural could be found on the side of Tri-City Seafood in downtown Greensboro for nearly twenty-five years. In 2007, the city of Greensboro purchased the prime real estate to build Union Square, but that didn't kill off the mermaid. Her owner, with the help of five other men, moved her to Tri-City Seafood's new location on Florida Street. Tri-City Seafood is no more, but the mermaid is still lounging on the side of the building. Unfortunately, she's in rough shape, so we really hope that someone can come in and throw her a life preserver.
