Middlesboro, Kentucky's Harrison Mayes was a coal miner, folk artist, and evangelist. He started dotting the Appalachian landscape with handmade concrete crosses and signs in 1918 at the age of 20 until his death in 1986. Unfortunately, not many of these have stood the test of time (and highway work and careless drivers and vandals, etc.), so finding one in the wild like this one in Moncure, NC is rare. As you can see by the photos, on one side the sign reads "PREPARE TO MEET GOD." On the other, it reads, "JESUS IS COMING SOON." Unlike most of his signs, this one is a ways off the road in the woods. If you're not looking for it, you won't see it. Probably because it is away from the road, this one is in excellent shape and still has the red paint on the letters.

After the one in Andrews and the one in Mebane, this is the third heart-shaped Harrison Mayes sign we've found in North Carolina. Do you know of another one? Please drop us a line!

To see a decent-sized collection of Mayes's signs, visit Norris, Tennessee's Museum of Appalachia, which even has the bicycle Mayes used.
