Mothman was a winged, red-eyed manlike creature that showed up in Point Pleasant, WV, in November of 1966 and disappeared about thirteen months later with the collapse of the Silver Bridge, which killed 46 people. During that time, there were reports of numerous sightings in the area of the Mothman. Because he disappeared when the Bridge collapsed, there are folks that believe he caused the collapse. There are also folks who believe that he came to Point Pleasant to warn people of the collapse.

Since the Mothman's disappearance, Richard Gere has starred in a feature film, The Mothman Prophecies, and Mothman has become a cottage industry in Point Pleasant. The local coffee shop serves Mothman-shaped cookies. The pizza joints boasts a Mothman pizza. The town holds a Mothman Festival every year. There's a twelve-foot statue of the Mothman in the center of town. Hell, there's even a Change.org petition with 3,700+ signatures demanding all Confederate statues in the US be replaced with statues of Mothman.
