On September 28th, the Counting Crows brought their Butter Miracle tour to Greensboro's White Oak Amphitheatre. Despite being a fan of the band since the first time I heard "Mr. Jones," this was only the second time I've seen them perform live. But once again, they did not disappoint.

Adam Duritz may not have his trademark dreads anymore, but he still has his killer voice. He led the band through many fan favorites like "Round Here," "Big Yellow Taxi," "Rain King," but also sprinkled in new tracks like "Bobby and the Rat-Kings."

The highlight of the show wasn't a musical number. It was when Duritz addressed the crowd, talking about how rough things were during quarantine and how he worried that the fans wouldn't return when the band hit the road.

But we did.

Opening for the Counting Crows was Frank Turner. Armed only with an acoustic guitar and fellow musician Matt Nasir on mandolin, Turner tore through a baker's dozen of classic songs like "Photosynthesis" and "Be More Kind" and new tunes like "Haven't Been Doing So Well."

It might've seemed like an odd pairing on paper. After all, as Turner told the audience, he isn't a folk artist but was a "punk rock kid with an acoustic guitar." But with his music stripped down to just acoustic guitar and mandolin, it was perfect.
