Last Saturday, The Fillmore erupted with Mon Laferte's sentimental, playful sound. The crowd kept time with every song as the Chilean singer/songwriter and Grammy winner flicked effortlessly from one genre to the next, encompassing a sizable range of emotion and prose.

The night was opened by Flor de Toloache, a New York City-based all-female Mariachi band with the most fantastic pants you ever did see. The group quickly snagged the attention of everyone within earshot and invited them to 'grito,' or scream, with the band. If you've ever heard a Mariachi band play you’re certainly familiar with the traditional noise. They continued to play a handful of traditional and modern styles interwoven with a brassy trumpet and plenty of strings, only stopping a few times to take a moment and grito to celebrate the moment.

Then, Mon. Some have said she is "the most famous person you have never heard of" and by the looks of her devoted fanbase, it's a disappointment she is not much much more well known. She flitted across The Fillmore’s stage in white '70s loafers and a dusty yellow baby-doll dress, revealing her tattooed arms, and admiringly sang love songs directly to her audience before picking up an electric guitar and plucking out a rockabilly riff. Her vintage style, range of genre, and mighty singing voice made her performance enjoyable to everyone--no matter their age, nationality or native tongue.
