Seeking Myrtle Beach's Grand Strange is a ten-part series by author Jim MacKenzie where he visits and writes about strange attractions in the Myrtle Beach area. In this installment, MacKenzie has a picnic at the War Bird Park.

Come fly with me, or at least picnic with me, at War Bird Park in Myrtle Beach.

The park is a wonderful city attraction to seek a little shade beneath some really cool military planes of the past.

The park is small but jam-packed with heavy flying metal. It currently sits within the limits of the old Myrtle Beach Military Airport. That airport was deactivated and its land was donated to the City of Myrtle Beach during the 1990s.

If you’re a plane nut, lots of information is provided on plaques near each formerly-flying exhibit.

It’s a great place to bring some cold drinks and some sandwiches and sit at one of the park’s picnic tables. A few walking trails are available if you’re feeling adventurous.

War Bird Park is adjacent to city’s current airport, so be prepared to see planes, both large and small, taking off and landing during your visit.

There is no cost to visit.
