Seeking Myrtle Beach's Grand Strange is a ten-part series by author Jim MacKenzie where he visits and writes about strange attractions in the Myrtle Beach area. In this installment, MacKenzie visits the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to check out its giant mural.

This gigantic ocean mural is a great way to visit the sea without getting sand in your bathing suit.

World-famous artist, Wyland, who paints huge oceanic murals all over the world, created a piece of renowned artwork on the side of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Standing below it, the awe-inspiring size of the mural forces you to think of your place and responsibilities to your planet and fellow animals. The artwork gives you an insider’s view of the ocean, gazing upon some tremendous animals as they peacefully explore. The mural is fifty feet high and nearly two hundred and fifty feet long. This mural features a pod of endangered right whales, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles.

Wyland's nickname is the "Marine Michealangelo." The Myrtle Beach mural is number 49 out of 100 in one of the largest art projects in the world, called Whaling Walls. Wyland also holds several world records for the largeness and vastness of his paintings.
