From the first steps that Abraham Alexander took onto the stage at the Ritz Raleigh, he had the crowd mesmerized. If they weren’t fans before he hit the stage, they were singing along and swaying to his music by the end of his set.

His engaging smile and soulful delivery of his poetic lyrics are just part of the reason his fans are faithful. Alexander’s mastery of the guitar on songs like his cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” is another reason.

After his first song, Alexander began talking about his childhood. After mentioning his life in Greece, a fan out in the crowd spoke to him in Greek. The two carried on quite a conversation that only the two of them understood. But it was clear that this reminder of home was heartwarming for Alexander.

The stories between songs as he would introduce songs like “Stay” and “Blood Under the Bridge” brought the crowd into the songs in ways that helped them understand the heartfelt lyrics.

After seeing him back in April, also as an opening act, 30 minutes just isn’t enough. I’m hoping to catch another show with Alexander as the headliner.
Alexander was on tour, opening for label mate Shakey Graves for this show in Raleigh on August 6.
