As funny as it sounds, my first exposure to the band Slow Pulp was their cover of “In Too Deep” by Sum 41 and I needed to hear more immediately. Their first album Moveys is nothing short of amazing but Slow Pulp blew it out of the park with their sophomore album Yard. I can already tell Yard is going to be one of my favorite projects released this year.
Every single Slow Pulp released in anticipation of Yard has been exceptional, so my expectations for the album were high and my expectations were exceeded. I couldn’t possibly pick one favorite track, but lyrically, my favorite might be the title track “Yard.” But some of my other favorites include “Fishes,” “MUD,” and the lead single “Cramps.” These three may be the most robustious from the album, but I think that is the edge that this album has over Slow Pulp’s previous work. Yard elevates Slow Pulp’s signature muted rambunctiousness.
There is genuinely no denying Slow Pulp’s growth since their last album that came out in 2020, not only as musicians but as songwriters as well. This album is so beautifully cohesive and there is such a natural flow to the album that shows how holistic its creation was. It is such an easy album to listen to and I am so excited for it to hit streaming services this Friday!
I have already had the pleasure of seeing Slow Pulp live last November when I saw them open for Alvvays and I can attest that they are remarkable live. So naturally I was thrilled to see Slow Pulp’s announcement for their North American tour, and even more thrilled that a stop in North Carolina was included. Babehoven will be opening for them as Slow Pulp plays the Motorco Music Hall in Durham on October 29th.
