On February 2nd, Mitski brought the first of her sold-out, two-night The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We Tour to the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Backed by an impressive seven-piece band, Mitski started the show bathed in white spotlight and sang "Everyone." Her second song, "Buffalo Replaced," was perfomred behind a giant curtain. The curtain fell, revealing Mitski on a three-foot round platform, bathed in light, which is where she spent most of her amazing show.
Her set was minimal: two chairs, which she would sometimes sit on and sometimes crawl on. She crawled across the stage like an animal at times, ending up on her back with her arms and feet in the air like a playful housecat. During "My Love All Mine," shards of metal came down around her, as you can see from our video below:
But the music and her voice was the real star of the show. She perfomed many classics like "I Bet On Losing Dogs" and "Washing Machine Heart" as well as many songs off her latest album, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We. Her 25-song set also brought a few new versions of some hits. "I Don't Smoke" had a country feel and Mitski even "line danced" to the tune while singing.
If you're able to catch her on her current tour, do so!

Strange Carolinas started as a hobby for Chris Hocker who often dragged his family to offbeat detours on family vacations. Hocker decided to start photographing and writing about these roadside attractions and in June 2014, launched Strange Carolinas with a story on Myrtle Beach's KISS Coffeehouse. In addition to chronicling over 400 attractions across the Carolinas, Strange Carolinas has also become an impressive music blog.
