Concert Review: Future Teens (Hangar 1819)

This Wednesday, Boston band Future Teens rocked Hangar 1819 in Greensboro. Sandwiched in between Maura Weaver and Aaron West And The Roaring Twenties, Future Teens played a killer and intimate set.

While their set was fun and full of energy, the subject matter of some of their songs is very meaningful. “Double Down,” their latest single that came out on Monday is about the experience of trans joy and they took time on stage to explain how important it is to have spaces, like their shows, where trans and queer joy are not only allowed but encouraged.

Future Teens is made up of Amy Hoffman and Daniel Radin, both responsible for vocals and guitar, bassist Maya Mortman, and drummer Colby Blauvelt. Colby was unable to join Future Teens on this tour so Ricardo Lagomasino filled in. I realized that Wednesday wasn’t the first time I had seen him play. Both times I saw Lucy Dacus he was her touring drummer. I thought he made a great addition to Future Teens.

Amy Hoffman chatted with the crowd in between songs and spoke about this wasn’t their first show they had played in Greensboro. They said about six years ago they played at New York Pizza, which is exactly what it sounds like, a pizza restaurant, to a crowd of about 12 people. He also disclosed that the crowd of 12 were mostly people from the other bands on the bill that night, and I think it’s safe to say that Wednesday night’s crowd gave them a much better impression of Greensboro.
