Concert Review: The Spooklights (Cat's Cradle)

The Spooklights broght their version of Ozark stomp grass into Carrboro, to the Cat’s Cradle, on Saturday night. This night wraps up four dates of opening for Dirtwire, on their current spring tour.

These guys are crazy talented and play a mix of instruments, including guitar, banjo, harmonica and at one point an electrified wooden 2x4. Pat Kay introduced the song “Red Rocking Chair,” as a mix of a 2x4 and a synthesizer. While Kay was on synth, Ben Miller played the 2x4.

They opened their set with “Lulu Gal,” with Miller playing a cigar box guitar and Kay playing banjo. They would each drum at times during each song, and they would take turns on the mic with vocals.

The crowd was always in motion, dancing to new songs “Train On The Island” and "John Johannah.” Both of these songs were great with a mix of electronic dance music and bluegrass that made you want to jump up and down and go a bit nuts.

Kay introduced, “Find Your Love,” as a song that he wrote for his wife. This song was a little quieter than the rest of the set, but it is a beautiful song.

Their last song for the night was “Daring Corey,” which the crowd loved. Seven songs was not enough. I think the audience would have liked to hear a couple more before this talented pair left the stage.
