With only two stops left on the Cartoon Darkness World Tour, Amyl and the Sniffers rocked the Ritz in Raleigh, North Carolina. Opening for them on this tour was Sheer Mag, who was a wonderful pick to join them and get the crowd amped up for Amyl.
Last October, Amyl and The Sniffers released one of my favorite records of 2024, Cartoon Darkness. On Wednesday night, they played a majority of the tracks from Cartoon Darkness. “Jerkin’” was definitely one of my favorites to hear live. I was also very intrigued to hear “Facts,” a single released alongside “U Should Not Be Doing That” during the Cartoon Darkness album rollout, but never made it on the album.
Aside from ripping the Cartoon Darkness tracks, Amyl and the Sniffers also played a handful of songs from their self-titled album as well as a handful from their 2021 release, Comfort Me. About halfway through their set, I was surprised to hear “Balaclava Lover Boogie,” a deeper cut from their 2017 EP, Big Attractions.
Amyl and The Sniffers’ music is punchy and in your face, and their live performance was no different. Amy Taylor, their lead singer, is one of the best performers I have ever seen live. Amyl has some fun and scantily-clad songs that they play into with their performance, but they also focus on more serious topics as well.
They address inequalities not just via their music. The band has never been shy to speak out publicly and through social media. Amy Taylor took a few minutes at the show on Wednesday night to address the genocide in Gaza, the detriments of recent changes made by the U.S. government, and how the rights of trans folks are diminishing among other injustices. The band may be from Melbourne, Australia, but they still understand that they have such a wide audience and that their voice has such a big influence on their fans everywhere.
