Some shows feel surreal for different reasons. Sometimes it’s the energy of the crowd, sometimes it’s the music itself. But every once in a while, it’s the realization that you’re actually standing in front of two Disney stars. Walking into The Ritz to shoot Aly & AJ was one of those moments.

For a lot of us who grew up in the early 2000s, Aly & AJ weren’t just another band. They were Disney Channel stars, part of a generation of artists whose music and movies were everywhere. Songs like "Potential Breakup Song" became pop staples almost overnight, and their presence during that era made them instantly recognizable.

So standing in the pit photographing them years later, watching them command a stage in a completely new chapter of their career, felt pretty wild.
Opening the evening was Hayden Blount, bringing a warm and intimate singer-songwriter presence to the stage. His set leaned into heartfelt storytelling and indie-pop sensibilities, giving the crowd something personal to connect with right away. It’s always interesting watching an opener slowly win over a room, and Hayden did exactly that. By the end of his set, the crowd was ready.

Over the years, Aly & AJ have evolved far beyond the pop sound many fans first discovered during their Disney era. Today, their music leans heavily into indie pop and soft rock influences, with dreamy synth textures and thoughtful songwriting that reflects a much more mature artistic direction.
What’s impressive is how naturally that evolution feels. Rather than running from their past, the sisters have embraced it while carving out something completely their own. Live, that growth is impossible to miss.
From the moment Aly & AJ stepped onstage, their connection with the crowd was undeniable. Their harmonies , always one of the duo’s strongest trademarks, filled The Ritz effortlessly, creating a warm and immersive atmosphere throughout the venue. The set flowed through different eras of their music, blending fan favorites with newer songs that highlight the direction they’ve taken in recent years. The crowd responded with massive sing-alongs, proving just how deeply their songs have stayed with people over time.

From the photo pit, this show was a blast to capture. The lighting wrapped the stage in soft color while the crowd lit up with excitement, nostalgia, and genuine joy. Every frame felt alive with fans smiling, hands in the air, people singing lyrics that clearly meant something to them.
And honestly, there was still a small moment of disbelief in my head thinking... "Holy shit! I'm photographing Aly & AJ right now." It's a reminder of how far artists, and sometimes even fans, travel over time.
With Hayden Blount opening the evening and Aly & AJ delivering a confident and heartfelt performance, The Ritz Raleigh hosted am intimate night that felt both nostalgic and forward thinking.

For longtime fans, it was a chance to reconnect with music that shaped an era.
For newer listeners, it was proof that Aly & AJ are still evolving and creating something meaningful today.
And for me behind the camera, it was just one of those really cool moments you don’t forget.
