Concert Review: Skillet (Ritz Raleigh)

Skillet brought their spring tour to the Ritz Raleigh last week, to a full house. Fans of all ages filled the venue. The Protest opened the show and got the crowd warmed up.

While Skillet’s music has evolved since their start in 1996, the energy they have on stage has stayed consistent and has never let up. Everyone in the band has incredible talent.

John Cooper fronts the band, belting out lyrics and playing bass. His wife Korey plays guitar and keys, and Seth Morrison joins her on guitar. Jen Ledger rounds out the crew on drums and vocals.

Both Seth and Korey have mad skills as they shred their hard rocking style from song to song throughout the night.

My first Skillet show was in 2001, I saw them twice that year. I’ve seen them several times through the years and their live show can’t be beat. While very polished, the raw energy breaks through on every song.

Skillet played many of the songs that they are known for, like “Rise,” “Psycho in My Head,” “Comatose,” and “Monster.” One of my favorites, “Sick of It,” was a big crowd favorite as they chanted along to the chorus with fists in the air.

John Cooper
As John introduced the song “Hero,” he told the story of his mother dying when he was 15. He said he didn’t think his life would ever get better. He continued, “then I met someone who changed my life... Jesus Christ. He is my hero.”

Skillet
It’s been about five years since I last saw Skillet, but the memories and lyrics came back quickly as the night seemed to fly by, even with a full set of 18 songs. If you get the chance, try to catch a show, Skillet will rock your face off!
