Concert Review: Boys Go To Jupiter (Kings Raleigh)

Boys Go To Jupiter rolled into Kings Raleigh on Thursday night on their Now You're A Cirle Tour to celebrate the new album of the same name.

Boys Go To Jupiter--keyboardist Caleb Martin-Rosenthal, singer Jess Kantorowitz, and guitarist Luke Volkert--released their awesome second album, the eight-track Now You're A Circle, on March 5th. Despite the newness of Now You're A Circle, the band is still creating and debuted a new song, the Martin-Rosenthal fronted "Double Purple Yo-Yo," at Kings after a "fight" between Martin-Rosenthal and Volkert to determine who would get to sing a song. And in case you're wondering, the new song is superb.

Backed by a drummer, trumpeter, and trombonist, Boys Go To Jupiter perfomed fifteen songs last night, before coming back onstage for an encore. They played my two favorite tracks, "Sunshine" and "Revenge Tour," off the new album. During "Sunshine," they brought a fan onstage to hold cue cards of the song's lyrics so the crowd could sing along. Boys Go To Jupiter also perfomed plenty of crowd favorites like "Wish U Were Here," "Tiltawhirl," "Lovers Always Lose," "Virginia," and the encore, their iconic "Theme Song." During "Wall St," Jess Kantorowitz jumped into the crowd and danced with as many audience members as possible.

I had never been to a Boys Go To Jupiter show before, so I'll assume that the way they performed and interacted with the crowd and with each other last night was par for the course. If that is indeed the case, get yourself to a Boys Go To Jupiter show as soon as you can. They're fun as hell. Folks were dancing and screaming along to all the words. The band joked around, made silly faces at each other, and just genuinely seemed to have as much fun as the audience.
