Concert Review: Billy Idol (Coastal Credit Union Music Park)

There are shows you’re excited to photograph. here are bands you’ve waited years to get in front of your camera. And then there are nights where you’re standing at front of house, looking through the viewfinder, and it suddenly hits you... Holy shit. I’m actually photographing Billy Idol. That was this night. No massive lineup. No five-band bill. Just DEVO , Billy Idol , and a packed summer night at Coastal Credit Union Music Park.

Before Billy Idol took the stage, Raleigh got a lesson in just how wonderfully weird rock music can be. DEVO walked out. And FUCK YEAH, the energy domes were there. But reducing DEVO to red hats and “Whip It” completely misses what made this band so important. Formed in Akron, Ohio in the early 1970s, DEVO grew out of an idea that society wasn’t necessarily evolving, it was de-evolving. If that makes sense. They weren’t simply trying to start another rock band. They were building an art project. Punk, electronics, satire, social commentary, bizarre visuals and performance art all collided into something the music world really hadn’t seen before.

Then came “Whip It.” The song became a massive mainstream breakthrough and turned DEVO into one of the defining visual acts of the early MTV era. But seeing them live all these decades later makes something very clear: DEVO was always much bigger than one song. There I wa,s photographing a band that started doing this more than 50 years ago, watching them perform with the same weirdness and personality that made people pay attention in the first place. That’s insane to think about, And getting to document it? Even crazier.

Then Came Billy Fucking Idol The lights went down. The anticipation built. And then that unmistakable silhouette appeared. The bleached hair. The leather. That trademark snarl. Billy Idol. There are certain people in music who don’t need an introduction. You see them and immediately know exactly who you’re looking at. Billy Idol is one of those people. Before becoming the solo icon most of the world knows today, Idol came out of the British punk movement and fronted Generation X, eventually taking that punk attitude and carrying it into something much bigger. When he moved into his solo career during the early ’80s, punk collided with rock, pop, and the emerging visual power of MTV. Then came the songs. “White Wedding.” “Rebel Yell.” “Eyes Without a Face.” “Dancing with Myself.” Songs that didn’t just survive their era , they became part of rock culture.

And decades later, Billy Idol is still standing onstage delivering them. This was the part that kept messing with my head. When you’re photographing concerts, you have a job to do. Watch the lights. Watch the movement. Find your composition. Wait for the expression. Get the shot. But every once in a while, the fan inside you interrupts the photographer. I remember looking through my camera and thinking about just how many photographers have captured this man throughout his career. How many magazine covers. How many legendary stages. How many decades of rock history. And now, somehow, I’m standing a few feet away getting my turn. Billy Idol is in my fucking viewfinder. Those are the moments where I remember how far this camera has taken me.

Billy Idol & Steve Stevens. And you can’t talk about Billy Idol live without talking about Steve Stevens. That partnership has been responsible for some of the most recognizable guitar work in Idol’s career, and seeing the two of them together is watching a piece of rock history that is still very much alive. There’s chemistry there that can’t be manufactured. Billy has the swagger. Steve has the guitar. Together, they still look like they belong on the biggest stage you can put in front of them. Nothing about it felt like watching artists simply revisit their glory days. It felt alive. It felt loud. It felt like rock ‘n’ roll.

That’s what made this lineup so damn good. DEVO and Billy Idol couldn’t be more different on the surface. DEVO came from art-school experimentation, social commentary, and the idea of de-evolution. Billy Idol took punk rebellion, charisma and rock ‘n’ roll attitude and turned it into global superstardom. But both helped change what popular music could look like. Not just what it could sound like. These were artists who understood early that image, performance and music could become one thing. Decades later, we’re still seeing their influence everywhere. I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph a lot of incredible artists. But I’ll never allow nights like this to become normal. Because they’re not. Standing at Coastal Credit Union Music Park photographing DEVO and Billy Idol in the same night is fucking insane. These are artists whose careers began long before I was even brought into this world. Artists whose songs have traveled through generations. Artists who helped shape music, fashion, MTV, punk, new wave and rock culture. And for a few songs, I got to stand across from them and freeze a tiny piece of that history. That’s the part of concert photography I’ll always love. And I walked away from Coastal with another one of those nights I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Because sometimes I look at where photography has taken me and genuinely can’t believe it. Billy Idol. DEVO. Through my lens. Yeah… That’s one I’m going to remember.
