On September 13th, Lucy Dacus brought her angelic voice, guitar, and Italian milkmaiden dress (her words, not mine) to Saxapahaw's Haw River Ballroom for a sold-out show. To call it a must-see show was a severe understatement.

Dacus, backed by her four-piece band, sounded amazing. She was funny, talkative, but that voice!

She performed four tracks off Historian, including a powerful rendition of "Night Shift" which had the crowd screaming along in unison to close the first part of her show. But it was her recent release, album-of-the-year candidate Home Video, that was the star of the evening. At one point during the show, she blazed through a one-two-three-four punch of "Hot & Heavy," "Christine," "VBS," and "Cartwheel." She and the band led the crowd through a singalong of "Going, Going, Gone." And of course fan favorite "Brando" was in there as well. Before the night was over, she performed ten of Home Video's eleven tracks.

Dacus closed the show with an unreleased song that was every bit as awesome as anything on Home Video. Can't wait to hear it again.

Can't wait to see her again.

  1. Yes, an excellent concert. The highlight was "Thumbs", with Dacus singing, to atmospheric guitar, about her father. How can she sing that every night? Good photos, Chris Hocker - nice to meet you; thanks for introducing me to Strange Carolinas.

  2. Pardon me, but I now understand the song "Thumbs" is about a close friend's (abusive) father. Still, as heartfelt a song as you will ever hear, a haunting, wrenching performance.
