On January 25th, Briston Maroney brought his sold-out Ultrapure Tour to The Ritz in Raleigh.

Armed with a guitar and a drum machine, Phoebe Go was the opener. She charmed the crowd for forty-five minutes, whetting their appetite for the main act.

Maroney hit the stage around 9:00 PM. The state itself was covered with silver cloths, with giant hearts and creatures in the background, giving it an unreal feeling. Maroney played crowd favorites, spoke with the crowd frequently, and even let the crowd sing "Happy Birthday" to him and the drummer Nathan (Briston's birthday was the 24th, Nathan's is the 27th). We saw Maroney nearly three years ago opening for Mt. Joy at the Orange County Speedway. He's no longer playing speedways and is regularly packing 2,000+ seat venues like the Ritz. Catch him soon before he moves up to the outdoor pavilions.

Strange Carolinas started as a hobby for Chris Hocker who often dragged his family to offbeat detours on family vacations. Hocker decided to start photographing and writing about these roadside attractions and in June 2014, launched Strange Carolinas with a story on Myrtle Beach's KISS Coffeehouse. In addition to chronicling over 400 attractions across the Carolinas, Strange Carolinas has also become an impressive music blog.
