The Retrograde
BY MARK DOLEJS
Tuesday proved to be a really fun night of rock-n-roll at Motorco Music Hall in Durham. Co-headliners The Retrograde and The Band Feel both brought their unique sounds and the audience was definitely feeling the groove.

Joey Fox and Cade Pickering on guitars
The Retrograde opened the night and had the crowd jumping, clapping, and singing along to their songs. The fan energy was matched by the band, as lead singer Joey Fox bounced around with his guitar.

Joey Fox of The Retrograde
Fox is quite talented with a nice vocal range, but just as important, keeping the audience engaged. If anyone in attendance didn’t know their music, it was not hard to move along with the familiar 70s/80s sound.

There were quite a few folks in the crowd that were super hyped, which in turn had the Tallahassee based band pretty psyched up by the end of their set.

Most of the band members have been playing together for several years, with guitarist Cade Pickering joining them last year. The band is rounded out with Carson Degner on drums and Josiah Pye on bass. Degner is an absolute beast on drums, I have no idea how they stayed intact by the end of their set.

Carson Degner on drums
Their set consisted of six songs off their 2024 album, That’s The Sprit, and four new songs, including “Why Can’t You Just Let Go,” “Love Me, Lose Me,” and “Sometimes.”

One of the highlights from the songs off their album was “If 6 Was 4.” This is a powerful ballad that shows off the band's musical talents as well as some nice song writing.

The Band Feel
Following The Retrograde was The Band Feel. There’s lots of hype with these guys and their musical talents shine with the guitar work of Tyler Armstrong and sharp vocals by Garrett Barcus.

Kadin Rea on bass
T.J. Steinwart is fantastic on drums, along with Kadin Rea on bass. Barcus is quite the showman, twirling and swirling around on stage, flipping his long locks of hair, as many of their songs have long instrumental interludes.

Garrett Barcus of The Band Feel
While Barcus has a fantastic voice, he seemed to miss the mark on engaging with the audience. He spent most of the night with his hair in his face and dancing around the stage. This was evident midway through their set, as quite a few people had already left the building.

These guys also played several new songs including “Hands In My Pocket,” “What of Now,” and “Fly Birdy Fly.” At one point in the show, Armstrong broke out an acoustic guitar and took a seat as he and Barcus teamed up on a beautiful song called “Libby Hill.”

Other notable songs were “Goodbye Virginia,” “Shoal Creek,” “Find a Love,” and the last song of the night, “In The Garden.”

T.J. Steinwart
The Band Feel has a really nice 70s, kind of Zeppelin mixed in with some Black Crowes vibe going on. I enjoyed both bands, but I will definitely be looking to catch The Retrograde again when they come nearby.
